Our PTA has a three-part mission:

• To facilitate communication among parents, administrators, teachers, and other groups.

• To fundraise in support of teaching and learning, which includes program support, enrichment for students, teachers’ mini-grants, school initiatives, family events and workshops.

• To build a supportive, positive, healthy community for all the students and their families at Sylvia Mendez. Every year there are multiple school initiatives to engage, volunteer and learn together. When requested, PTA helps with planning, looking for volunteers, communicating, or what is needed. If you’re already part of our school community, get more information on how to participate by visiting the password protected area of the website, the Bamboo Bulletin.

PTA Meetings

PTA meetings are your “one-stop-shop” to learn about issues that are important to you and directly affect your child: programs and curriculum, school funding, and plans for special events and celebrations. They are a way to find out about volunteer opportunities and to connect with other Sylvia Mendez families. We also regularly have special guest speakers who present material helpful to families.

The Sylvia Mendez PTA holds meetings on eight Wednesdays throughout the year from 5:45–7:00pm. When parents are allowed on campus, dinner and childcare are provided for all meetings. Dinner is served at 5:30pm, right before the meeting begins. Check the Sylvia Mendez PTA Google Calendar for dates and times of our meetings throughout the year.

What does the PTA do?

The PTA raises money, rallies volunteers and organizes many school programs, intiatives and events, such as: room parents, rolling drop-off,  field trips, facility improvements, book distributions, after-school class scholarships, literacy, math and science nights, the Halloween Dance, promotion, and student performances.

Why should I join the PTA?

More than 30 years of research has proven that children do better when their parents are involved both at home and at school. How do I join the PTA?

Simply join a regular PTA community meeting, every month on a Wednesday.  We believe all voices count and thus will pay membership dues for all the parents, caregivers, staff and teachers who want to be members of the PTA.

Are there Any Specific PTA Roles I Could Help Fill?

Yes! We are currently looking for volunteers to serve the Sylvia Mendez community in a number of roles. You can find them on our Volunteering Page.
