Our PTA has a three-part mission:

• To facilitate communication among parents, administrators, teachers, and other groups.

• To fundraise in support of teaching and learning, which includes academic enrichment for students and professional development for teachers.

• To build a supportive, positive, healthy community for all the students and their families at Sylvia Mendez.

PTA Meetings

PTA meetings are your “one-stop-shop” to learn about issues that are important to you and directly affect your child: programs and curriculum, school funding, and plans for special events and celebrations. They are a way to find out about volunteer opportunities and to connect with other Sylvia Mendez families. We also regularly have special guest speakers who present material helpful to families.

The Sylvia Mendez PTA holds meetings on six Wednesdays throughout the year from 6:00–7:00pm. Dinner and childcare are provided for all meetings. Dinner is served from 5:30–6pm, right before the meeting begins. Our dates for meetings in the 2018-19 School Year include September 19, November 14,  January 23, March 13, April 17, and May 22.

 

After-School Enrichment Classes

The PTA offers after-school enrichment classes for Sylvia Mendez students.  We offer classes in art, music, chess, cooking and more. The PTA also funds class scholarships.

What does the PTA do?

The PTA raises money, rallies volunteers and organizes many school programs and events, such as: field trips, tutoring, facility improvements, book distributions, after-school class scholarships, literacy and math nights, the Halloween Dance, graduation, and student performances.

Why should I join the PTA?

More than 30 years of research has proven that children do better when their parents are involved both at home and at school. Grades are higher, test scores rise, self esteem grows, and schools improve. There is a simple way to make these outcomes a reality for your child: join our PTA and get involved at Sylvia Mendez.

How do I join the PTA?

Contact our membership coordinator, and sign up through the envelopes distributed in the beginning of the year in the Wednesday folders, or join at a regular PTA community meeting.  Be sure to include your email address if you have one so we can add it to the Sylvia Mendez mailing list.  Suggested dues are sliding scale, up to $10 per person.  If you cannot afford $10, please pay what you can. If you can include more than $10, please do so and help another parent’s membership. In order for membership to remain active, please pay dues each year.

Are there Any Specific PTA Roles I Could Help Fill?

Yes! We are currently looking for volunteers to serve the Sylvia Mendez community in a number of roles. You can find them on our Volunteering Page.
