Keeping our children safe is a top priority for Sylvia Mendez. Please respect the Playground Rules Below.

Swing Rules

  • Only one kid at a time on a swing.
  • Sit with your bottom on the seat of the swing.
  • Swing forwards and backwards, not side- to-side.
  • For your turn, count up to 30 swings.
  • Then the student swinging gets off and the counter takes a turn.
  • Swing area is for swinging only. Running between the swings is not allowed.
  • Get off the swings safely, without jumping.
  • No twisting the swings
  • When the bell rings, all play stops, get off the structures and drop to a knee.
  • Wait for the teacher to blow two whistles. Then walk quietly to your line.

Play Structure Rules

  • Keep equipment away from play structure area (balls, hoops, jump ropes, etc…).
  • Up the ladder, down the slide.
  • One person on the trolley at a time.
  • One person on the pole or slide at a time.
  • No tag or chase on climbing structure.
  • Use the trolley one way only.
  • No hanging upside down on the trolley.
  • No slamming the trolley.
  • When the bell rings, all play stops, get off the structures and drop to a knee.
  • Wait for the teacher to blow two whistles. Then walk quietly to your line.

Tag Rules

  • Only play in the TAG zone, not on the play structure.
  • If a player doesn’t want to play tag, then other players must respect that.
  • Butterly fingers.
  • No ball tag.
  • Tag games stay outside on the yard.
  • When the bell rings, all play stops, get off the structures and drop to a knee.
  • Wait for the teacher to blow two whistles. Then walk quietly to your line.

Four Square Rules

  • The player in the highest-ranking square serves the ball.
  • After a single bounce in one square, the player must hit the ball into any other square.
  • If the ball hits the line say, “Good job! Nice try!”.
  • Gentle serves.
  • Include everyone in the game.
  • The game continues until someone makes an error.
  • No “Calling”
  • No “Judges”
  • Resolve disagreements with“Ro-sham-bo”.
  • High five the other players after the game and say “Good job! Nice try!”.
  • When the bell rings, all play stops, get off the structures and drop to a knee.
  • Wait for the teacher to blow two whistles. Then walk quietly to your line.

Wall Ball Rules

  • The first person in line serves the ball, first bouncing on the blacktop and then hitting the wall.
  • Each player takes turn - Bounce wall, bounce hit.
  • No “Do-Overs”. 
  • No “Calling”. 
  • No “Judges”. 
  • Resolve disagreements with “Ro-shambo”.
  • When the bell rings, all play stops, get off the structures and drop to a knee.
  • Wait for the teacher to blow two whistles. Then walk quietly to your line.

Kickball Rules

  • The ball is rolled towards home plate, and the player who is “up” (kicking), tries to kick the ball.
  • Each player has three chances to kick the ball. The kicker may not call the “pitch.”
  • 3 Foul balls count as “outs.”
  • If the ball is caught in the air, the kicker is out.
  • If the ball is thrown to a base, and the person on base catches it while he/she is touching the base, the player running to the base is out.
  • Once a team gets 3 outs, the teams switch sides.
  • No score board, “We play for fun”.
  • Infield players must stand behind the backstop at all times.
  • No “Do-Overs.”
  • Resolve disagreements with “Ro-sham-bo”.
  • High five the other team after the game and say “Good job! Nice try!”
  • When the bell rings, all play stops, get off the structures and drop to a knee.
  • Wait for the teacher to blow two whistles. Then walk quietly to your line.

Soccer Rules

  • Kick only the ball
  • If the ball hits your hand or arm, the other team gets a free kick.
  • High five the other team after the game and say “Good job! Nice Try!”
  • When the bell rings, all play stops, get off the structures and drop to a knee.
  • Wait for the teacher to blow two whistles. Then walk quietly to your line.

Spider Web Area rules

  • No playing on the spider web before school.
  • Keep equipment away from Spider web area (balls, hoops, jump ropes, etc…).
  • Hang from the spider web from your hands only.
  • 2 hands on the rope at all times.
  • Keep your hands and feet on the blue rope at all times.
  • Do not push or pull anyone on the spider web.
  • No bouncing on the spider web.
  • No tag or chase on the spider web.
  • No jumping on/off the spider web.
  • When the bell rings, all play stops, get off the structures and drop to a knee.
  • Wait for the teacher to blow two whistles. Then walk quietly to your line.

Pole Rules

  • One person on the pole at a time.
  • You must sit on the black seat at all times.
  • For your turn, count up to 15 spins, then the student spinning gets off and the counter takes a turn.
  • When the bell rings, all play stops, get off the structures and drop to a knee.
  • Wait for the teacher to blow two whistles. Then walk quietly to your line.

The Wheel rules

  • 1 person can sit in between the orange bands.
  • 5 kids sitting on the wheel at a time.
  • Feet must point outside of the wheel.
  • The next person in line can push the wheel 15 times in a safe way.
  • The “Pusher” stands from the green zone to push the wheel.
  • You must be wearing tennis shoes to play on the wheel.
  • When the bell rings, all play stops, get off the structures and drop to a knee.
  • Wait for the teacher to blow two whistles. Then walk quietly to your line.
